Why 100% enclosed automatic dry cleaning machines matter.

When solvent never contacts open air — and never contacts the person operating the machine — the cleaning is safer, more consistent, and better for the garment. This post explains the engineering behind professional dry cleaning and why the machine is the most important factor in quality.

How an enclosed automatic dry cleaning machine works

A professional dry cleaning machine operates on the same basic principle as a washing machine, but with chemical solvent instead of water — and in a fully sealed environment. The garment enters a drum. Solvent is pumped in from a recovery tank. The drum rotates, tumbling the garment through the solvent. The solvent is extracted, filtered, and returned to the tank. The garment is then dried in the same drum with warm air circulation.

The entire process — from solvent entry to solvent recovery — happens inside a sealed stainless steel chamber. At no point does solvent vapour escape into the workspace. At no point does the operator contact the solvent directly.

Cycle time

The actual cleaning cycle takes 8–15 minutes depending on garment type and soil level. The majority of the 48-hour turnaround time is in pre-spotting stains by hand before the cycle, and steam pressing each garment individually after it.

The sealed solvent circuit — why it matters

The sealed circuit design produces three distinct benefits:

1
Garment safety
The solvent never contacts air during the cycle, so oxidation and contamination of the solvent is minimised. The garment is cleaned in fresh, filtered solvent every time — not in a degraded open bath.
2
Operator safety
No solvent vapour exposure. Open-vat MTO cleaning exposes operators to petroleum vapour for hours daily — a known occupational health risk. Enclosed machines eliminate this entirely.
3
Environmental containment
Solvent cannot enter the drainage system or evaporate into the air. All solvent is accounted for in the recovery tank.

Solvent recovery — why 99% matters

Professional dry cleaning machines recover and recycle the solvent used in each cycle. The recovered solvent is passed through activated charcoal filters to remove dissolved soiling and odour compounds, then returned to the supply tank for reuse.

A professional machine recovers 99%+ of solvent per cycle. This matters for three reasons: the solvent is expensive and recovery makes the operation economically viable; the recovered solvent is cleaner than fresh solvent that has not been run (it has been through activated charcoal); and recovered solvent means minimal environmental release.

The 1% or less that is not recovered exits the machine as dry garments — the final solvent content of a properly processed garment is effectively zero. This is what prevents garments from smelling of solvent after professional dry cleaning. The faint scent that sometimes remains dissipates within a few hours of airing.

The capital cost difference is what sustains MTO-based cleaning in the Indian market. The Swiss Laundry made the investment in enclosed machines in 2013 and has operated on this standard continuously. We have never used MTO or any unregulated petroleum solvent.

The Swiss Laundry — Enclosed machines since 2013

The Swiss Laundry has operated fully enclosed automatic dry cleaning machines from day one. The solvent never contacts open air, the operator, or the surrounding environment. Solvent recovery of 99%+ per cycle. No open-vat, no hand-applied process. This is the only standard we have ever used in 13 years.

Questions

Questions answered directly.

A sealed system where garments are cleaned with professional solvent inside a sealed drum. Solvent never contacts open air, is recovered and recycled after each cycle, and leaves no residue on the garment. The operator has no direct contact with the solvent.

The primary cost difference is equipment. An enclosed machine costs ₹8–20 lakhs. Open-vat MTO cleaning requires equipment costing under ₹20,000. The price difference you see between a professional dry cleaner and a neighbourhood shop reflects this capital investment — and the solvent quality difference.

Ask to see the machine, or ask what type of machine they use. A professional dry cleaner will show you a closed steel drum unit and name the machine brand. If there is no machine visible, or they describe a manual process, they are using open-vat cleaning.

Yes, significantly. Enclosed machines recover 99%+ of solvent per cycle. Open-vat cleaning allows solvent to evaporate into the air and potentially enter drainage. The professional solvent — hydrocarbon — also has better environmental degradation characteristics than MTO-class petroleum solvents.

Yes — since October 2013, when we opened at Kasba Industrial Estate. We have never used open-vat cleaning or MTO. Our machines are European-standard enclosed units with activated charcoal solvent filtration and full recovery systems.
