Water use — dry cleaning vs laundry

The most counterintuitive fact about dry cleaning's environmental footprint is water use. A single wash cycle in a front-loading machine uses 40–80 litres of water. A top-loading machine uses 100–200 litres per cycle. Professional dry cleaning uses effectively zero water in the cleaning cycle itself.

For garments that require dry cleaning — silk sarees, woollen suits, structured jackets, embroidered occasion wear — dry cleaning is the only safe method anyway. But for garments where both methods are technically possible, the water footprint of laundry is significant, particularly in a water-stressed country where clean water demand will only increase.

Kolkata's water supply infrastructure is under increasing strain. For a city that already faces seasonal water pressure issues, every litre saved in non-essential laundry has a cumulative value that most residents underestimate.

Solvent and the environment

The environmental story on solvent depends entirely on what solvent is used and how it is handled. This is where the difference between professional dry cleaning and unorganised MTO-based cleaning is most stark from an environmental perspective.

Professional dry cleaning machines recover 99%+ of solvent per cycle through activated charcoal filtration and closed-loop recovery. The tiny amount not recovered exits as dry vapour with the garment — not liquid released to drains or the atmosphere.

MTO-based open-vat cleaning, by contrast, releases solvent continuously to the air through evaporation, and the contaminated solvent often enters drainage systems. At scale across thousands of small establishments in Indian cities, this is a significant urban air quality and groundwater issue.

Microplastics — the laundry problem dry cleaning avoids

Every machine wash cycle of a synthetic garment — polyester, nylon, acrylic — releases hundreds of thousands of microplastic fibres into wastewater. These fibres pass through most municipal water treatment plants and enter waterways. It is one of the fastest-growing forms of water pollution globally.

Dry cleaning does not involve water agitation, and therefore does not cause microplastic shedding. For synthetic garments that can be either washed or dry cleaned, choosing dry cleaning eliminates the microplastic release of that cleaning cycle. At the scale of a household that dry cleans regularly rather than machine washing synthetic garments, the cumulative reduction in microplastic release over years is significant.

Important caveat

Most synthetic garments can be machine washed safely. We are not suggesting unnecessary dry cleaning of synthetics. The point is that where both methods are available for a garment, the environmental case for dry cleaning is stronger than most people realise.

Solvents compared — hydrocarbon, Perc, GreenEarth

Not all dry cleaning solvents are equal in their environmental profile. The three in use in India:

Hydrocarbon solvent — petroleum-derived but highly refined. Biodegrades relatively well. Low vapour pressure. The standard in India's professional sector. Environmental concern is primarily around spills — managed by closed-loop machine use.

Perchloroethylene (Perc) — chlorinated solvent, historically the global standard. Effective cleaner but persistent in soil and groundwater. IARC Group 2A (probable carcinogen). Being phased out in Europe. Still used in some Indian professional dry cleaners.

GreenEarth (liquid silicone, D5) — the most gentle on fabrics and the cleanest environmental profile of the three. Biodegrades to sand, water and CO2. Higher cost, less widely available in India. The option we would use if cost parity existed with hydrocarbon.
