Myth 1: Hot water cleans better
Hot water does dissolve some types of soiling more effectively than cold — specifically oils and grease. But it also does considerable damage to natural fibres. Silk proteins denature above 40°C, causing permanent texture change. Wool scales open under heat, causing felting and irreversible shrinkage. Cotton colours bleed at high temperatures.
The appropriate water temperature is: cold (20–30°C) for coloured synthetics and most everyday wear; 30–40°C for cottons with light soiling; 60°C only for white cotton bed linen where sanitisation is the goal. For silk and wool: never above 30°C, and hand washing or dry cleaning is strongly preferred.
A silk blouse washed at 60°C will shrink, lose its lustre, and develop a rougher texture that cannot be reversed. A woollen sweater washed at 40°C may felt partially. The damage from one wrong-temperature wash cycle is often permanent.
Myth 2: Overloading saves time
An overloaded drum has three effects: the garments do not circulate freely through the water or solvent, reducing cleaning effectiveness; the mechanical friction between garments increases — every item rubs against every other item for the duration of the cycle; and the extraction spin is less effective, leaving garments wetter and requiring longer drying time.
Mechanical abrasion from overloading is one of the primary causes of fabric pilling and premature wear in machine-washed garments. It affects all fabrics but is most visible on cotton knits, synthetic blends and any garment with surface texture. Loading the drum to 75–80% capacity is the correct practice — not to the point where clothes cannot move freely.
Myth 3: One liquid detergent for silk, wool and cotton
Standard liquid detergents are formulated for cotton and synthetics. They contain enzymes — protease, lipase, amylase — that break down protein, fat and starch molecules. This is effective on cotton. It is damaging on wool and silk, because wool and silk are themselves protein fibres. The enzymes attack the fabric alongside the stain.
Wool and silk require detergents specifically formulated for protein fibres — no enzymes, neutral pH. Using a standard detergent on a merino wool sweater will cause progressive fibre degradation visible as pilling and loss of softness. After several washes, the structural integrity of the fibre is compromised.
The correct approach: standard detergent for cotton and synthetics; specialist wool/silk detergent for natural protein fibres; dry cleaning for garments where hand washing carries any risk.
Myth 4: More detergent means cleaner clothes
Excess detergent does not dissolve fully in a standard wash cycle. The residue deposits in the fabric. In cotton, residual detergent makes the fabric stiffer and attracts dust and soiling faster in subsequent wears. In wool and silk, detergent residue interferes with the fibre's natural properties — the lustre of silk and the warmth retention of wool both diminish.
Washing machines require much less detergent than most people use. The manufacturer's recommended dose is calibrated for a full load with normal soiling. A half load needs half the detergent. Using the full dose for a half load leaves significant residue. An extra rinse cycle helps but does not fully compensate.
Myth 5: Maximum spin speed dries clothes faster
High spin speeds — 1,200–1,600 RPM on most domestic machines — extract more water effectively from dense cotton and synthetics. But the centrifugal force at these speeds applies significant mechanical stress to fabric. Delicate weave structures, embroidery threads, elastic components and decorative details are all vulnerable to high-speed spin damage.
Appropriate spin speeds: 800–1,000 RPM for most cotton; 600–800 RPM for delicate cotton and linen; 400 RPM maximum for wool and silk; 400–600 RPM for embroidered and decorated garments. Many domestic machines have a delicate cycle with an automatic low spin speed — use it for anything other than standard cotton and synthetics.
The extra 10 minutes of drying time from a lower spin speed is a worthwhile trade for significantly longer garment life.
