European-standard machines at the higher end. Indian-assembled machines at the lower end of that range, still a significant capital commitment.
This is the single largest component of why professional dry cleaning costs what it does. The machine must be amortised across every garment cleaned over its working life. With standard maintenance, a professional machine lasts 10–15 years. The daily throughput required to make the economics work is significant.
Open-vat MTO cleaning requires equipment costing ₹5,000–20,000. No enclosed machine. No solvent recovery system. No capital cost to amortise. This is why MTO-based dry cleaners can charge half the price of a professional operation — and why the comparison is not valid.
Solvent cost — and why recovery matters
Professional hydrocarbon dry cleaning solvent costs ₹800–1,200 per litre. A typical cleaning cycle uses 3–8 litres of solvent in the drum (the exact amount depends on drum size and garment load). Without recovery, the solvent cost per cycle would be ₹2,400–9,600 — making professional dry cleaning economically impossible.
Solvent recovery reduces this to the small fraction that is not recovered — the 1% or less that exits with the dry garment as vapour. In practice, the solvent makeup cost per cycle is ₹80–200 — the recovered and filtered solvent is reused. The recovery system is both an environmental necessity and an economic one.
Pressing and labour — where the time goes
The machine cycle is 8–15 minutes. Pressing is 5 minutes to 45 minutes per garment. For a heavily embroidered Banarasi saree or a bridal lehenga, the pressing alone takes three to four times longer than the cleaning cycle. This is where skilled labour cost is concentrated.
Professional pressing is not a simple operation. Each fabric type requires a specific temperature, pressure, and steam level. Embellishments require individual attention — pressing around them, not over them. Velvet pile requires a needle board. Structured suit shoulders require a tailor's ham. This is not work that can be done mechanically without skill.
Trained pressers — people who can consistently press a 6-metre Banarasi saree to the standard a customer expects — take months to train and command skilled worker wages.
Facility, utilities and compliance
A professional dry cleaning operation requires: adequate floor space for the machine, pressing equipment, intake and quality-check areas, and storage; three-phase electrical supply for the machine and boiler; water supply for the steam boiler; ventilation adequate for the building; trade licence, GST registration, professional liability insurance, and compliance with local industrial estate regulations.
