Assessment before cleaning
The first question with any vintage garment is whether to clean it at all — and if so, by what method. This is a different starting point from the one most people have, which is "how do I clean this?"
Cleaning is always an intervention. Every cleaning process — dry cleaning, hand washing, spot cleaning — applies chemistry and some degree of mechanical stress to fabric. For a new garment, this stress is entirely manageable. For a 75-year-old silk saree with brittle fibres, the same intervention may cause damage.
Is the fabric structurally sound — does it hold together when gently flexed, or does it feel papery and brittle? Are there existing areas of damage — small tears, thin patches, loose weave — that would be worsened by cleaning? Is the dye stable — does it bleed or transfer when touched with a slightly damp finger? Are embellishments secure — are threads, zari, sequins or other additions firmly attached?
Understanding fabric age
Textiles degrade over time through a combination of oxidation, light exposure, mechanical stress from folding and handling, biological activity (moths, mildew, bacteria), and chemical reactions from storage materials and body soils.
The rate of degradation depends heavily on how the garment has been stored. A silk saree stored in a dry, cool, dark environment with good air circulation may be in excellent condition after 80 years. The same saree stored in a damp steel trunk in a humid room may be significantly degraded after 30 years.
Indian storage conditions — particularly in Bengal — are among the most demanding in the world for textile preservation. High heat, very high humidity and the presence of insects create a hostile environment for all organic materials. Many families in Kolkata have discovered that garments stored through several decades of monsoons require more intervention than equivalent garments stored in drier climates.
"Age on its own is not the problem. A 100-year-old Dhaka muslin kept correctly is in better condition than a 30-year-old synthetic kept badly. What matters is the environment the garment has lived in."
The cleaning approach
For vintage garments that are structurally sound and warrant cleaning, professional dry cleaning is typically the safest approach. The reasons are the same as for any delicate fabric: no water, no heat stress, no agitation, and a controlled chemistry that can be adjusted for delicate or fragile materials.
For very fragile garments, a modified process is used. Lower drum speed, shorter cycle time, and post-cleaning inspection at each stage. For garments where even a dry cleaning cycle carries risk, surface cleaning only — with solvent applied by hand rather than in a machine — may be the appropriate method.
Long-term preservation
For the most significant vintage textiles — family heirlooms, pieces of historical interest, garments that have been in a family for generations — the goal is preservation rather than use. These garments are not necessarily worn regularly; they are maintained for their cultural, emotional or historical significance.
Long-term preservation follows different principles from regular garment care. The priorities are stability (preventing further deterioration), documentation (recording the garment's condition and history), and appropriate environment (controlling the conditions that accelerate deterioration).
Cleaning for preservation purposes is done less frequently than cleaning for use. A garment that is stored and not worn may only need professional cleaning every 15–20 years, primarily to remove accumulated airborne soils and any biological activity that may have begun.
India-specific considerations
India's textile heritage is extraordinary. The country has more surviving pre-industrial handwoven fabric — Banarasi, Jamdani, Kanjivaram, Dhaka muslin, Pahadi shawls, Assam silk — than virtually any other culture. Much of this fabric is not in museums; it is in family trunks, passed between generations at weddings and births.
The specific challenges for heritage textile preservation in India are: humidity (the primary accelerant of biological deterioration), pests (especially clothes moths and silverfish, which feed on protein and starch respectively), and the cultural practice of storage in steel trunks with inadequate internal environment control.
The traditional Indian steel trunk is widely used for storing valuable textiles. The problem: steel trunks create a sealed microenvironment. In humid conditions, moisture trapped in the trunk cannot escape. The result is high internal humidity for extended periods — ideal conditions for mould and biological activity. If using a steel trunk, line it completely with acid-free paper, include large silica gel inserts, and open and air the contents during dry spells in winter.
