How to remove mould from clothes in India — what works in 85% monsoon humidity.

Every October in Kolkata, trunks are opened and mould is found on garments that looked fine in May. This guide covers what causes it, what works at home on cotton, why silk and wool need professional treatment, and how to prevent it from returning.

Home method — for cotton and synthetic fabrics with mild mould.

Surface mould on cotton and synthetic garments can be treated at home if caught early — within the first 2–4 weeks of growth. The goal is to kill the organism and remove the surface growth before it penetrates deeper into the fibre.

Air outdoors in direct sunlight first
Take the moulded garment outdoors immediately. Sunlight is a natural antifungal — UV kills surface mould spores. Brush off any loose mould outdoors with a stiff brush. Do not do this indoors — mould spores will spread.

White vinegar soak — cotton and synthetics only
Soak cotton or synthetic garments in a solution of white vinegar and water (1 part vinegar to 3 parts cold water) for 1 hour. Vinegar is mildly acidic and disrupts the cell walls of mould organisms. Do not use on silk or wool.

Cold machine wash with antifungal detergent
After the vinegar soak, cold machine wash with a detergent containing antifungal agents. Hot water can set any remaining mould staining and does not improve mould killing at domestic washing temperatures.

Dry completely before storing again
Ensuring the garment is completely dry before returning to storage is the most important step. Any residual moisture in a stored garment creates the conditions for mould to regrow.
Mould vs mildew — the same problem at different stages

Mildew is superficial mould growth on the fabric surface — the white or grey film that brushes off. Mould is deeper growth that has penetrated the fibre structure and shows as dark spots or patches. Mildew responds well to home treatment. Established mould requires professional treatment.

Mould on silk and wool — why home treatment causes more damage.

The home treatments that work on cotton mould — vinegar soaks, washing machine, bleach — cause serious damage to silk and wool.

Vinegar on silk
The acetic acid in vinegar damages silk fibroin — the protein that gives silk its lustre and strength. A vinegar soak that effectively treats mould on cotton will dull, weaken, and potentially discolour silk.

Bleach — damages all delicate fibres
Bleach is sometimes recommended for mould removal. On cotton, it works but may remove fabric dye. On silk, wool, and embroidered fabric, bleach causes irreversible damage — fibre breakdown, colour loss, and structural weakening.

Home washing machine agitation on silk
The mechanical agitation of a home washing machine, combined with the water contact, causes felting in wool and lustre loss in silk — in addition to any mould damage that was already present. You end up with a mould-treated garment that is also structurally damaged.
Mould on a silk saree — the correct response

Do not brush, do not apply any liquid, do not put in a washing machine. Take it outdoors and allow fresh air for 30 minutes without brushing. Then bring it to a professional dry cleaner immediately. Tell us how long it has been moulded. Early professional treatment significantly improves the prognosis.

Professional dry cleaning for mould-affected garments addresses both the biological growth and the soiling it leaves behind, using chemistry and processes appropriate for the specific fabric.

Antifungal pre-treatment on a spotting table
Professional antifungal agents applied to the affected areas under controlled conditions kill the mould organism and begin breaking down the organic matter it has deposited in the fabric. This step cannot be replicated at home on silk or wool without causing fabric damage.

Hydrocarbon solvent cycle
The solvent cycle removes the dead mould organism and associated organic matter from the fabric. For silk and wool, this is the safest cleaning method — no water, no agitation that causes felting or lustre loss.

Assessment of permanent discolouration
After cleaning, we assess whether the mould has caused permanent discolouration to the fabric — a distinct grey, green, or black staining at the points of deepest growth. If permanent discolouration is present, we tell you honestly. Early-stage mould (2–4 weeks) rarely causes permanent discolouration. Mould present for multiple months often does.
The mould timeline for professional treatment

Surface mildew (white film, present under 2 weeks): excellent prognosis, complete removal likely. Established surface mould (2–6 weeks): good improvement, possible faint residual at deepest growth points. Deep mould (6+ weeks, dark staining): improvement likely, permanent discolouration possible. Severe long-term mould (months): significant improvement achievable, some permanent marking likely.

Early-stage mould appears as a white or grey film on the fabric surface that partially brushes off. This is treatable professionally with high success rate. Dark spots or patches that have penetrated below the surface represent more established growth — treatable but with lower complete removal probability. Bring it in and we will assess honestly.

Brief outdoor airing in indirect sunlight can reduce surface mould and mould odour. Prolonged direct sunlight on silk causes UV damage to the silk fibre. Outdoor airing for 30–60 minutes in shade is beneficial; prolonged direct sun exposure is not. For treatment, bring it to a professional.

Three measures: clean before storing (mould needs organic soil to establish), use breathable cotton storage bags not plastic (plastic traps humidity), and place silica gel packets in storage locations, replacing them monthly through the monsoon.

The musty smell indicates biological activity in the fabric — early-stage mould or mildew that may not be visibly obvious yet. Bring the garment in for professional cleaning before wearing. Professional cleaning removes the biological matter causing the smell and prevents the growth from developing further.

Professional hydrocarbon dry cleaning combined with antifungal pre-treatment is effective at removing mould from fabric.
