Does the dry cleaning solvent kill bacteria?
No. The hydrocarbon solvent used in professional dry cleaning is a non-polar organic compound. Its function is to dissolve oils, greases and particulates — not to kill biological organisms. Bacteria are protected from solvent action by their cell membranes, which are not disrupted by non-polar solvents at the concentrations and contact times used in dry cleaning.
This does not mean dry cleaning fails to clean. Solvent cleaning removes the organic compounds — oils, skin cells, food residue — that bacteria feed on. It removes the biological substrate. But it does not sterilise the fabric in the way that heat or chemical disinfectants would.
Oils, grease, particulates, protein residues, sweat compounds, perfume residue, most stains. This removes the food source and growth substrate for bacteria — significantly reducing bacterial load, even without killing bacteria directly.
How steam pressing sanitises — the real step
Steam pressing is where professional dry cleaning produces a genuinely sanitised result. Every garment that goes through The Swiss Laundry is pressed with boiler-generated steam at 140–160°C. At these temperatures, bacteria and most pathogens are destroyed within seconds.

The pressing step is not a secondary aesthetic finish. It is a genuine high-temperature treatment that transforms a cleaned garment into a sanitised one. This is why professional dry cleaning differs from simply leaving clothes out to air.
Post-illness garment care — what to do and ask for
If a garment has been worn during an illness — particularly a respiratory illness — standard dry cleaning with pressing is the correct treatment. The combined solvent cleaning and steam pressing will sanitise the garment effectively for most common pathogens.
Tell your dry cleaner. When dropping off a garment worn during illness, say so. This allows them to handle the garment appropriately and ensure it is pressed at full temperature rather than a reduced temperature used for very delicate fabrics.
If a garment has visible mould growth from damp storage, standard pressing alone is not sufficient. The mould penetrates into the fibre structure. This requires specialist pre-treatment before the cleaning cycle and is something to discuss with the dry cleaner before drop-off.
Seasonal storage and dust mites
One of the most relevant applications of dry cleaning's sanitising effect is pre-storage cleaning. Garments stored for months — particularly woollens stored through Kolkata's summer — accumulate dust mites, skin cell residue, and the organic compounds that attract insects.
Dry cleaning before storage serves two functions: it removes the organic substrate that attracts insects, and the steam pressing destroys dust mites and their eggs. A garment that has been dry cleaned and pressed before storage is significantly less likely to emerge damaged by insects or mites than one stored unwashed.
This is not a theoretical benefit. It is the practical reason that dry cleaning before seasonal storage is one of the most consistent recommendations we make — and one of the most clearly supported by what we see when garments come back out of storage after six or eight months.
