Leather care in brief

Leather is preserved by three things: keeping it clean, keeping it conditioned, and keeping it dry. In India’s climate — monsoon humidity, summer heat and significant temperature variation — all three need specific attention.

Why leather needs conditioning in India: Leather is tanned animal hide — the tanning removes the natural oils. Conditioning restores them. India’s summer heat (40°C+) and dry winters strip oils faster than temperate climates. The monsoon adds moisture then strips oils when the leather dries. Regular conditioning is more important in India than most other countries.
01

Types of leather — and what each needs

Full-grain leatherHighest quality · Most durable

Top layer of the hide — untouched natural grain. Ages into a patina. Responds best to conditioning. Most resistant to moisture if well-maintained. Found in high-quality jackets, bags and shoes.

Top-grain leatherQuality leather · Slightly treated surface

Upper hide, lightly sanded for uniformity. Slightly less durable than full-grain but very common in quality garments. Responds well to conditioning. Most common leather in Indian market jackets.

Suede and nubuckBuffed surface · Most delicate

Soft napped texture — highly vulnerable to water and staining. Requires specialist suede cleaner and protector spray. Do not use regular leather conditioner on suede or nubuck.

PU / synthetic leatherArtificial · Different care

Polyurethane coating on fabric base — not true leather. Does not need conditioning. Wipe clean with a damp cloth. Cannot be repaired if it peels. Does not age well in heat.

How to tell real leather from synthetic: Real leather has an irregular grain pattern and feels slightly warm. Synthetic has a perfectly regular pattern and feels cool and plasticky. Press your thumb firmly — real leather wrinkles slightly; synthetic does not.

Cleaning leather — at home

Routine cleaning (monthly or after each wear in dusty conditions): Wipe with a clean, barely damp cloth to remove surface dust. Dry naturally at room temperature. Follow with a light application of leather conditioner.

Deeper cleaning (for stains and embedded dirt): Use a specialist leather cleaner or very dilute mild soap (a few drops in a cup of water). Apply with a soft cloth in circular motions. Never scrub. Wipe clean with a fresh damp cloth. Allow to dry completely before conditioning.

After rain exposure: Blot excess moisture with a dry cloth — do not rub. Dry slowly at room temperature with good air circulation. Never use a hair dryer, radiator or direct sunlight. Heat dries the natural oils unevenly and causes cracking. Once dry, condition immediately.

What not to apply to leather: Never use acetone, alcohol-based products, baby wipes, petroleum-based products, or household cleaning sprays. These strip the leather finish permanently and dry out the hide.
03

Conditioning leather — the most important step

Conditioning is the most important regular maintenance task for leather and the most often neglected. Unconditioned leather becomes stiff, loses colour depth, and eventually cracks — and cracked leather cannot be fully repaired.

How often: Every 3–6 months for regularly worn leather. After every rain exposure. After cleaning. Before storing for a long period.

How to condition: Apply a small amount of leather conditioner to a soft cloth — not directly to the leather. Work in small circular motions across the entire surface. Allow to absorb for 10–15 minutes. Buff gently with a clean dry cloth to remove excess. A light coat absorbed is more effective than a heavy coat sitting on the surface.

Which conditioner: A neutral leather conditioner — beeswax-based or lanolin-based products work well. Avoid silicone-based conditioners — they create a surface seal that prevents the leather from breathing. For suede and nubuck, use only products specifically designed for those surfaces.

Leather conditioning in Kolkata

Kolkata’s summer (April–June) — temperatures above 40°C with low humidity — causes leather to dry rapidly. A leather jacket stored unprotected through a Kolkata summer without conditioning before storage will emerge visibly drier and may have begun to crack. Condition before summer storage and again when bringing out for winter.

Stain treatment on leather

Stain typeTreatmentDo not
Water spotsAllow to dry naturally. If mark remains, dampen the entire panel lightly and dry evenly to blend. Condition after drying.Do not apply heat. Do not rub when wet.
Oil / greaseBlot excess immediately. Apply cornstarch or talcum powder overnight to absorb oil. Brush off gently. Specialist leather cleaner if mark remains.Do not rub — spreads the oil. Do not apply water.
InkProfessional cleaning — ink on leather is very difficult to treat at home without damaging the finish. Bring to a professional promptly.Do not attempt home removal with alcohol — it strips the finish.
Mould / mildewWipe with a cloth lightly dampened with dilute white vinegar (1:1 with water). Allow to dry. Condition thoroughly. Severe mould — professional cleaning.Do not use bleach. Do not dry in sunlight.
Colour transferSpecialist leather colour transfer remover. Professional cleaning if deep. Prevention: condition leather regularly to create a barrier.Do not scrub — abrades the surface finish.

Storing leather through India’s seasons

1
Clean and condition before storingNever store leather that is dusty or has absorbed sweat. Clean and condition — the conditioning creates a protective layer that reduces moisture absorption during storage.
2
Stuff to hold shapeFill leather jackets with acid-free tissue to maintain shoulder and body shape. Stuff bags to prevent sides from creasing inward. Never fold a leather jacket for long-term storage — fold marks become permanent.
3
Breathable cover — never plasticStore in a breathable cotton garment bag or pillowcase. Plastic traps moisture and creates mould. Leather needs air circulation to remain healthy during long storage.
4
Cool, dark, dry locationAway from direct sunlight — UV fades leather dyes and dries the hide. Away from heat sources and damp walls.
5
Silica gel during Kolkata monsoonHumidity above 85% creates mould conditions for stored leather. A small silica gel packet inside the garment bag, replaced monthly during June–September, significantly reduces this risk.
06

When to use professional leather cleaning

Use professional cleaning when: The leather has heavy staining that has penetrated the finish. Large-area mould has developed. The finish has dulled and the leather has lost its colour depth. Significant ink or colour transfer is present. The jacket has a lining that needs cleaning along with the leather. The leather is vintage or has irreplaceable sentimental value.

At The Swiss Laundry, leather garments are inspected before processing, cleaned by hand with leather-safe solvents, and conditioned after cleaning. The result is a leather garment cleaned without stripping the finish — which is the primary risk of inappropriate home treatment.

Wipe with a barely damp cloth for surface dust. For stains, dilute mild soap in water, apply gently with a cloth, wipe clean, dry at room temperature. Always apply leather conditioner after cleaning.

Keep away from rain where possible. If leather gets wet, dry slowly at room temperature — never with heat. Apply conditioner immediately once dry. Store in breathable bags with silica gel to prevent mould.

Every 3–6 months for regularly worn leather. After rain. After cleaning. Before long-term storage. Increase frequency in India's dry summer months — heat strips oils faster.
