Professional laundry is more than washing clothes. It is a series of decisions — about method, temperature, chemistry, agitation and finishing — that together determine how long a garment lasts and how it looks when it comes back to you. This guide covers everything you need to know.
Professional laundry is the washing, rinsing, finishing and pressing of garments and household textiles using commercial-grade equipment, precise temperature control and fabric-appropriate chemistry. It is not the same process as putting clothes in a home washing machine — even when the end result looks similar.
The difference begins with the machine. A professional laundry uses industrial washer extractors rated for continuous commercial use, operating at capacities and extraction forces that domestic appliances cannot match. It continues with the water — softened or filtered, dosed precisely per load weight. It includes the chemistry — detergents, builders, softeners and sanitisers selected and measured per fabric type, not poured by hand from a bottle. And it ends with finishing — steam pressing, folding and packaging to a standard that preserves the garment's shape and presentation.

The Swiss Laundry offers two professional washing methods for different fabric types and soiling levels: machine wash using industrial washer extractors, and hand wash for delicate fabrics that require individual attention. Both methods use the same intake assessment, the same finishing standards and the same quality inspection before return.
The most important difference between having a garment washed at home and having it professionally laundered begins before any detergent is added. It begins with the machine.
A home washing machine is an appliance designed for convenience. It handles 6 to 8 kilograms per cycle. The drum rotates at 800 to 1,400 RPM during spin. Most household cycles run at 30 to 60°C. The machine uses a fixed water volume, a generalised wash programme, and is designed for two or three uses per week.
An industrial washer extractor is a different category of machine. Capacities range from 10 to 120 kilograms per cycle. The critical engineering difference is in the extraction phase — industrial machines generate 300 to 400 G-force during extraction, compared to 100 to 200 G-force in a domestic machine.
"G-force in extraction determines how much water is removed mechanically. More water removed mechanically means less time in the dryer, less heat, and less thermal stress on the fabric over the life of the garment."
This is why a professionally washed shirt holds its colour, shape and press longer than one washed at home repeatedly — even with the same detergent and at the same temperature. The machine is simply operating to a different standard.
Machine washing at a professional laundry uses industrial washer extractors to clean garments that are robust enough to withstand mechanical agitation in water. It is the appropriate method for the majority of everyday garments — shirts, trousers, kurtas, t-shirts, linens, towels, bedding, uniforms and cotton household textiles.
What happens in a professional machine wash cycle:
Intake and sorting. Garments are sorted by fabric type, colour and soiling level before washing. Darks, lights and whites are always separated. Heavy soiling is pre-treated before the main cycle.
Pre-treatment of stains. Individual stains — food, oil, ink, perspiration — are identified and pre-treated with appropriate agents before the garment enters the machine.
Programme selection. The correct wash programme is selected for the fabric: temperature, agitation speed, cycle length and number of rinses.
Washing. The drum fills with correctly dosed water and detergent. Agitation loosens and suspends soiling. The precise temperature is maintained throughout.
Rinsing. Multiple rinse cycles remove all traces of detergent and soiling. Residual detergent in fabric causes itching, stiffness and faster re-soiling.
Extraction. High G-force spinning removes the maximum possible water before drying begins.
Drying and finishing. Garments are dried at controlled temperature and finished — steam pressed, folded or hung as appropriate for the garment type.

Hand washing is the appropriate method for garments that are too delicate for mechanical agitation in a drum — fabrics where even the gentlest machine programme would cause damage through physical stress, friction or heat.
Garments that require hand washing include: fine silk that is not suitable for dry cleaning, delicate lace, heavily beaded or embellished pieces where stones or sequins would be damaged by drum agitation, antique and vintage textiles, fine wool knits too delicate for machine programmes, and any garment where the construction — padding, boning, structured interfacing — would be distorted by mechanical action.

What professional hand washing involves:
Hand washing is significantly more time-intensive than machine washing and is priced accordingly. It is always chosen after assessment — never as a default for delicate-looking garments that can safely be machine washed on a gentle programme.
Water temperature is one of the most consequential decisions in laundry. Too hot and fibres contract, colours bleed and finishes are damaged. Too cool and soiling — particularly body oils, grease and bacteria — is not effectively removed. The correct temperature is always a balance between cleaning efficacy and fabric safety.
"Most garment damage in laundry is caused not by the wrong detergent but by the wrong temperature. A 60°C wash on a coloured polyester blend causes the same permanent damage as a 90°C wash on cotton."
Temperature and fabric: synthetic fibres (polyester, nylon, acrylic) begin to distort above 40–50°C. Protein fibres (silk, wool) contract significantly above 30°C in water. Cotton and linen tolerate heat well but will shrink at high temperatures if not pre-shrunk. Elastane and lycra blends lose their stretch permanently above 40°C.
In professional laundry, the temperature is selected per garment type at assessment — not set once for the entire load.
The chemistry of laundry is more complex than a detergent bottle suggests. Professional laundry uses a range of products in precise combinations, each serving a specific function in the wash cycle.
Enzyme-based detergents on silk or wool will degrade the protein fibre over time — not visibly after one wash, but progressively across multiple cycles. A professional laundry uses enzyme-free formulations for all protein fibres.
Laundry care labels use a standardised international symbol system. The key symbol for laundry is the washtub — a container shape that indicates the washing method and temperature permitted for the garment.
Additional symbols alongside the washtub cover drying (square), ironing (iron shape), bleaching (triangle) and dry cleaning (circle). Together they form a complete care instruction for the garment.
"The temperature on a care label is a maximum — not a recommendation. Washing at a lower temperature than stated is always safer for the fabric, though less effective at removing heavy soiling."
A common source of garment damage is ignoring the bars beneath the washtub — using a normal high-agitation cycle on a garment marked for gentle wash. The bar is not a suggestion about temperature. It specifies the mechanical action of the drum.
Most laundry damage is preventable. As with dry cleaning, almost all damage traces back to a decision made before the wash begins.
"The three most common laundry mistakes are: wrong temperature, wrong agitation, and washing garments together that should be separated."
Colour bleed. Washing coloured garments — particularly new ones — with whites or lights causes permanent dye transfer. Dark colours and reds are highest risk. New garments should always be washed separately for the first two to three cycles.
Shrinkage. The most common cause is washing at too high a temperature for the fabric. Cotton shrinks at 60°C+ if not pre-shrunk. Wool felts and shrinks in warm water with agitation. Synthetics distort above their heat tolerance.
Pilling. Friction between garments in the drum causes surface fibres to break and ball. Washing garments inside-out, using mesh laundry bags for delicates, and reducing agitation all reduce pilling.
Residual detergent. Insufficient rinsing leaves detergent in the fabric. This causes skin irritation, stiffness, faster re-soiling (residual surfactant attracts dirt) and gradual fibre degradation. Professional machines use multiple programmed rinse cycles.
Stretching. Heavy wet garments hung to dry stretch permanently under their own weight. Knits, bias-cut garments and fine jersey should always be dried flat.
Overloading. An overloaded machine cannot agitate garments properly — garments do not clean effectively and increased friction causes faster wear. An underloaded machine causes excessive mechanical friction.
Wrong detergent on protein fibres. Enzyme detergents on silk or wool cause progressive fibre degradation across multiple washes — not visible in the first wash but accumulating over time.
Finishing — ironing, pressing and folding — is what separates professionally laundered garments from garments that have simply been washed. The process that follows the wash is often where the most visible quality difference appears.

Correct storage after laundering preserves the work done in washing and finishing, and prevents re-soiling or damage before the garment is worn again.
Allow garments to air before storing. Even freshly laundered garments retain some residual warmth and slight moisture from finishing. Storing directly in a closed wardrobe traps this moisture and can cause mustiness.
Hang shaped garments. Shirts, formal trousers, jackets and structured garments should be hung on appropriate hangers to maintain the pressed shape. Folded hanging creases the collar and sleeves.
Fold knits and jersey. Heavy knits hung in a wardrobe stretch under their own weight. Fold and store flat on a shelf.
Separate whites from colours in storage. Even clean garments transfer colour to adjacent whites if stored in contact over time, particularly in warm and humid conditions.
Do not over-pack a wardrobe. Garments pressed together lose their finish and develop permanent creases. Adequate spacing maintains the press.
Use breathable garment covers for formal wear. Cotton or muslin covers protect stored formal garments from dust and light. Plastic covers trap moisture.
