The Swiss Laundry vs a neighbourhood laundromat — a direct comparison.

Most people assume dry cleaners and laundromats are interchangeable. They are not. This post compares every aspect of the two operations — from the machine to the solvent to the person doing the pressing.

The machine difference

The most fundamental difference between a professional dry cleaner and a laundromat is the machine. A laundromat uses a standard washing machine drum — water in, agitation, water out, spin dry. The machine is the same class of equipment as a household washing machine, just larger.

A professional dry cleaning machine is an enclosed, sealed system. The garment goes into the drum. Solvent — not water — is pumped from a recovery tank into the drum. The drum rotates. The solvent dissolves oils, greases and soils. The solvent is then extracted by centrifuge, passes through an activated charcoal filter, and returns to the recovery tank. The garment is then dried inside the same sealed system with warm air. No solvent contacts open air. No solvent residue remains on the garment.

Equipment cost

A professional hydrocarbon dry cleaning machine costs ₹8–20 lakhs. A commercial washing machine of equivalent capacity costs ₹80,000–2 lakhs. The investment difference reflects an entirely different level of process engineering.

Water vs solvent

Water is a powerful solvent for water-soluble soils — salt, sugar, sweat, most food stains. It is not effective for oil-based soils, and it is actively damaging for water-sensitive fibres.

Silk is the clearest example. Silk protein fibres absorb water and swell. The structure that gives silk its lustre and drape is partly destroyed by this swelling. A silk garment washed in water typically emerges duller, stiffer, and slightly misshapen. Even if it is dried carefully, the original handle is rarely fully recovered.

Dry cleaning solvent dissolves oil and grease — the soils that water cannot touch — without penetrating the fibre structure. Silk cleaned in hydrocarbon solvent emerges with its original lustre and drape intact.

Water is the right tool for cotton. Solvent is the right tool for silk. Using the wrong tool for the fabric is the most common cause of irreversible garment damage.

The pressing difference

At a laundromat, pressing is typically done with a consumer steam iron or a commercial flat iron. These reach 120–160°C at the sole plate, with steam generated from water heated internally.

At The Swiss Laundry, pressing is done with boiler-fed steam. A dedicated steam boiler generates pressurised steam at 140–160°C which is piped to pressing equipment. The steam penetrates the fabric from both sides simultaneously — the pressing buck below and the steam head above. The result is a pressed finish that a consumer iron cannot replicate.

For structured garments — suits, blazers, sherwanis — this distinction matters significantly. The steam relaxes the internal structure of the garment and reforms it correctly. A consumer iron works from one side only and rarely achieves the same depth of pressing on a structured garment.

Staff and training

A laundromat typically requires staff who can operate washing machines and irons. At a professional dry cleaning facility, the staff requirements are substantially higher.

Fabric identification
Each garment is inspected on arrival. The fabric is identified — silk, wool, polyester blend, embroidered, structured — and the correct cleaning process is assigned.

Pre-spotting
Stains are assessed and pre-treated with targeted spotting agents before the cleaning cycle. Different stain types — tannin, protein, oil-based — require different chemistry.

Machine operation
The dry cleaning machine is set for the correct solvent temperature, drum speed and drying cycle for the garment type.

Hand finishing
After cleaning, garments are inspected, hand-finished and pressed individually. Each garment receives individual attention, not batch treatment.

The result on your garment

For everyday cotton garments, both a laundromat and a professional cleaner will produce acceptable results. The difference is not meaningful for a white cotton shirt or a pair of denim jeans.

For anything beyond that — silk, wool, structured clothing, embroidered garments, occasion wear, heirloom pieces — the difference is significant and in some cases irreversible. A silk saree damaged by water washing cannot be restored. A suit that has been washed and dried incorrectly will not press back to its original shape.

The garments that must not go to a laundromat

Pure silk sarees and blouses. Woollen suits, shawls and sweaters. Any garment labelled "dry clean only". Embroidered, beaded or sequinned garments. Structured jackets, blazers and sherwanis. Heavily pleated or ruched fabric. Any garment you cannot afford to damage.
