The 48-hour breakdown

The 48-hour standard is not bureaucratic — it reflects the actual time required for each stage of the professional dry cleaning process to be done correctly. Here is what happens in those 48 hours.

Hour 0–1
Inspection and pre-spotting
Each garment is examined for stains, damage, and any special requirements. Stains are pre-treated with targeted spotting agents before the main cleaning cycle. This stage cannot be rushed for garments with complex soiling.
Hours 1–3
Machine cleaning cycle
The enclosed drum machine runs a full cycle — loading, solvent introduction, cleaning rotation, solvent extraction, initial drying. For delicate fabrics, lower drum speeds and shorter cycles are used.
Hours 3–5
Machine drying
Hot air circulation in the sealed machine extracts residual solvent from the fabric. Insufficient drying time at this stage produces the persistent solvent smell that is a sign of process failure.
Hours 5–8
Off-gassing and airing
Garments are hung in a ventilated space to allow final trace solvent to dissipate. This is the most skipped step in sub-professional operations.
Hours 8–46
Pressing and finishing
Pressing is the most variable phase. A plain cotton shirt takes 5 minutes. A heavily embroidered Banarasi saree can take 30–45 minutes of hand pressing. A structured sherwani requires careful garment-specific pressing that cannot be rushed.
Hours 46–48
Quality inspection and packaging
Each garment is inspected against its original condition notes before packaging.

Same-day service

Same-day service compresses the full process into a single working day. For garments received before 10:00 AM, return by 17:00 is achievable for most straightforward pieces. The phases that are compressed in same-day service are the airing phase and in some cases the pressing phase.

When same-day works well

Plain cotton and synthetic shirts, trousers, everyday kurtas. Garments without complex staining. Garments that do not require hand pressing. Non-silk, non-embroidered, non-structured pieces. If your garment does not fit these criteria, 48-hour service produces a better result.

What actually takes time

The pressing phase is where the most time variation occurs. Professional pressing is garment-specific — different fabrics require different steam temperatures, different pressure, different handling techniques.

"A plain white shirt is 5 minutes on the pressing board. A Sabyasachi lehenga with heavy zari and stone work is 45 minutes of careful, section-by-section hand pressing. The 48-hour standard accommodates both."

Complex stain treatment also adds time. A stain that requires multiple treatment cycles — turmeric, sindoor, set oil — may go through 2–3 treatment applications with drying time between each. Each cycle adds hours to the process.

When it takes longer

The most common causes of turnaround beyond 48 hours at professional dry cleaners are: stain treatment that requires multiple cycles; high volume periods (October pre-Puja, November–February wedding season); garments requiring repair before cleaning; and complex multi-layer or heavily embellished pieces that require extended pressing.

If your garment is not ready when promised without prior notice, this is a service failure that warrants a direct conversation with the cleaner.

Peak season turnaround

During October (pre-Puja) and December–January (wedding season peak), standard turnaround extends to 72 hours. We advise clients of this during peak periods. Pre-booking for important occasion garments during these periods is strongly recommended.

The process has multiple stages that cannot be rushed without compromising quality: inspection and pre-spotting (15–30 minutes per garment), machine cleaning cycle (45–90 minutes), machine drying (60–90 minutes), off-gassing and airing (2–4 hours), pressing and finishing (varies significantly by garment complexity), quality inspection. Compressing this sequence means either skipping steps or rushing the drying phase, which leaves residual solvent in the garment.

Same-day service is safe for straightforward garments — cotton shirts, plain trousers, polyester blends — where the machine cycle and drying complete within the available time. For silk sarees, embroidered pieces, heavy woolens, and structured garments, same-day service compresses the drying and finishing phases in ways that affect quality. We are honest about which pieces can be done well in same-day and which cannot.

We can accommodate this for genuinely urgent requirements, but we advise against it for valuable silk sarees. The drying and finishing phases for silk require time that cannot be fully compressed. A silk saree rushed through same-day may have residual solvent smell or pressing that does not fully replicate the garment's original drape.

Not if it was a silk, wool, or delicate garment. A full professional dry cleaning cycle — machine cleaning, solvent recovery and drying, pressing — takes a minimum of 3–4 hours for a single simple garment. If clothes are returned within 1–2 hours, the cleaning process was abbreviated or the garment was not put through a full machine cycle.
