The fundamental difference

Dry cleaning uses chemical solvents — no water. Laundry uses water and detergent. The two processes are designed for different categories of fabric. Using the wrong one causes damage that is usually permanent.

Dry cleaning is required for: silk, wool, velvet, brocade, zari, heavily embroidered garments, structured suits and blazers, and most occasion wear. Laundry is suitable for: cotton shirts, T-shirts, jeans, linen trousers, synthetic sportswear and most everyday separates.

What the care label tells you

Every garment sold in India must carry a care label. The symbols tell you exactly which process is required:

Circle (○) — dry clean. Any solvent. Do not wash in water.
Circle with P (Ⓟ) — dry clean with perc or hydrocarbon solvent.
Tub / bucket symbol — can be washed in water. Dots inside indicate maximum temperature.
Circle with X (⊗) — do not dry clean.
Tub with X — do not wash in water.

If the care label has been removed, assess by fabric: silk, wool, velvet and embroidered garments — dry clean. Cotton, linen and synthetics — wash. When uncertain, dry cleaning is always the safer choice.

What goes wrong when you wash dry-clean-only

The most common garment damage seen at The Swiss Laundry is a dry-clean-only item washed at home. The consequences depend on the fabric:

Silk — sheen dulls permanently, weave distorts, watermarks form
Wool — shrinks and felts irreversibly; the microscopic fibre scales interlock and cannot be separated
Embroidery and zari — thread distorts, metallic threads tarnish, sequins warp
Structured tailoring — internal canvas delaminates, shoulder padding distorts, shape is lost permanently

If a dry-clean-only garment has been accidentally washed: do not iron it, do not tumble dry it, do not attempt to stretch it. Bring it to a professional dry cleaner immediately — some post-wash damage can be partially mitigated if treated promptly before the fabric dries and sets.

The cost comparison

Dry cleaning costs more per garment than standard laundry. But for garments that require dry cleaning, washing is not a cheaper alternative — it causes permanent damage. The cost of dry cleaning is the cost of preserving the garment correctly. A silk saree dry cleaned ten times costs less than replacing one ruined by a single wash at home.
